Then it went back to a full screen of Windows, running in the Parallels VM. I tried running Exile with DirectX and it did the same as earlier (Well, I think it included one more step): Screen went black, then the HDTV I'm using as a monitor switched from 16x9 mode to 3x4, which it does when Riven runs.

So I went to Microsoft to install DirectX and got the web installer for DirectX 9.x, downloaded it, and installed it. I went back and tried to install it from the Exile CD, but could not, since it thought XP was Win NT (which I understand, so that's not an issue). So I did some searching and found a lot that convinced me people are using Direct X on Parallels. I picked DirectX and the program started, the screen went black (Parallels was in full screen mode), and then I was back to my Windows screen - without any warning messages. I installed Exile, started it up, and it gave me a choice of using DirectX or using software for video acceleration. When I installed Exile, I did not try to install DirectX, since I had heard (apparently years ago, according to what I found while searching) that Parallels had issues with DirectX, so I should count on Parallels Tools to handle it. You should see a message that the ChangeServiceConfig was successful.
